We’ve all heard the preservation nightmare stories: budget overruns, ever-expanding schedules, and plenty of surprises during construction. But no project needs to be like this. With proper early documentation, assessments, and research, preservation projects can be completed on time, within budget, and with minimal surprises. Preservation projects are different than typical construction because they require considerably more effort at the beginning, and should include three preliminary tasks: documentation, assessment, and historical research. All three are necessary and are interrelated. We will discuss how to implement each task to ensure a successful outcome and include examples of how early planning informed design and construction decisions that contributed to successful preservation projects.
