Title: Cyber-Physical-Social Systems for Personalized Learning.

Post-pandemic, the Higher Education sector at large is facing unprecedented challenges. Universities need to rethink how they deliver education, how they conduct research, and how they position themselves to stay competitive in a vastly changing global marketplace. In this context, strategic thinkers focus on new opportunities to explore. These include the creation of “New Global Universities”, the delivery of “Education ”, and the advancement and provision of “Personalized Learning” as key pillars. Advancing Personalized Learning is one of the fourteen NAE Grand Challenges for Engineering. Within the Systems Realization Community we hypothesize that all grand challenges can be modelled as cyber-physical social systems. Accordingly, I will connect the dots between the three identified pillars to stimulate new ideas for research aimed at advancing personalized learning in the context of Education

Professor Dirk Schaefer holds the Chair in Industrial Design at the University of Liverpool in the United Kingdom (UK). He serves as Head of Division of Industrial Design in the School of Engineering, to provide vision and academic leadership, and to manage and developed the discipline to ensure it achieves highest standards in all its activities. He is an international thought leader in research on Cyber-physical Systems for Production Engineering with a focus on Digital/Smart Design and Manufacturing (Industry ). Additional interests include Cyber-physical Social Systems, focusing on the design of Digital/Smart Healthcare Provision Systems of the future (Health ), as well as Smart Packaging solutions. His accomplishments comprise more than 180 technical publications, including ten books. He has delivered more than 120 talks at events all over the world, many invited, and supervised over 150 students on PhD, MS, BS and other research projects. Prof. Schaefer is an elected Fellow of the Institution of Engineering Designers (FIED), the British Computer Society (FBCS), the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications (FIMA), the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA), and the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
